Fruit spoilage on long export routes from Georgia
The problem
Georgian exporters of apples, peaches and plums are looking beyond one market. New markets in the EU and the Gulf mean longer routes: more days in trucks, at borders and in transhipment ports. Every extra day gives mould and spoilage more time, and a downgraded or rejected load costs the cargo, the freight and the buyer's trust.
What the market says
FreshPlaza reports that border queues at the Larsi checkpoint “have historically caused spoilage due to long queues and harsh weather”, and that EU routes bring “the long distance” and strict supermarket standards. Exporters are being pushed “to look westward to the EU” (Investor.ge, 2025).
What Bio Shield is building
A plant-based, water-soluble coating powder designed to slow mould and spoilage in transit. Packers mix it into the wash, dip or spray water they already use, so no new machines are needed.
